KHADYAK: ‘CrippledXXX’ is the first single + music video from KHADYAK in 2016.
KHADYAK was raised in France by her parents who are both Senegalese and began dancing at the age of 8. Now based in Paris, KHADYAK is “open to learn more” and is becoming patient with herself. When she’s not working on her own music project, she’s working as a choreographer, back-up singer, percussionist and stylist. KHADYAK has also worked with Metronomy, YELLE, and Breakbot.
Khady a.k.a. KHADYAK recent release is a music video for her single titled CrippledXXX. KHADYAK takes you on a journey in the video, to a place that has been recreated from her memory. As buildings mirror the nearby landscape and light pierces it ways through the shadows of tunnels, dancers create movement that mimics the steel structures bolted in the urban setting of Paris.
CrippledXXX is your first single of 2016, what have you noticed about yourself that has changed since the beginning of your music career?
I’m open to learn more and curious about new things and patient with myself. I have to find the solution to a problem even if it takes a long time. I like to focus on the solution rather thinking about problems. I also learn to take responsibility of the choices I make.
What was your thought process when you were thinking of a concept for your music video CrippledXXX?
I wanted movement, minimalism and powerful photography. The music is slow and aggressive at the same time I wanted to move in a big urban installation, to express how you can be lonely in a big city like Paris. I needed movement of the pain you can overcome using the Dance Bone Flexing, beauty of contorsion. For the clothes, I needed a charismatic and a strong look. Even if you hurt baby and life is violent with you, you gotta keep walking and look as fierce as possible.
You posted a poem by William Ernest Henley on Instagram, with the message of ‘finding your strength in vulnerability’, how do you find strength within vulnerability?
I think everyone has his/her own way. But me, by accepting my default and mistakes and using it like an asset for my creativity. I’ve learned discipline and to focus on my vision even if there’s chaos around me.
Tell me a little bit about the story of how the song CrippledXXX came to be?
CrippledXXX is the first poem that I wrote; I personified an accident that I had years ago. I posted the poem Invictus because Ernest wrote his poem in the same condition in a hospital.
It was the first time in my life I couldn’t move. Dancing everyday since I’m 8 years old. Movement is really a way to express my feelings, and energy. This was the destruction of something in myself but at the same time a rebirth because I found new ways of expression like writing music.
Describe your personal fashion style.
I really like colors, clever cuts and being comfortable.
How does your fashion sense inspire your music?
For me everything is related, fashion and music, the story you bring is the most important link. I had the support of the designer Christelle Kocher. I love her brand Koché, it’s feminine, boyish elegant and urban at the same time. I like the energy she puts in her work. I think she is really “ avant-gardiste” by using contemporary art and movement, strong women for the image of her brand. Being the first model of her Lookbook inspired me a lot for CrippledXXX.
